The “Thigh” Gap In Our Thinking

“OMG. SPRING BREAK AND SUMMER ARE CREEPING UP ON ME. IT’S CRUNCH TIME. HERE’S TO EATING AIR FOR THE NEXT FEW MONTHS.”

Sound familiar? This is what I see through my news feed day after day, the not so silent plea of ladies publicly announcing their dire need to shed some weight before bikini season rolls in. I’d say they are crazy, but are they really? I mean, look around for a second. Stores and websites are full of bathing suits, stick thin models and ads proclaiming the magic tricks to help you “Lose 15 lbs and be bikini ready!” all before winter has even had a chance to leave the building.

The holidays have passed, but clothing companies and gyms definitely don’t pass up the opportunity to dish out their most brilliant marketing tools of all – guilt and comparison. “You just ate more than usual over the holidays? Let us Photoshop a picture of an average girl, make you feel awful about yourself and persuade you to buy our product.” The craziest part? We buy more than the product offered…we buy the lie that we’re not good enough, too.

I’m not telling you that it’s wrong to workout or eat nutritional foods. Those are both important pieces to living a balanced, thriving, long life. Just remember that it stops being healthy when your focus is solely image driven. There is so more to life than obtaining a thigh gap. Retouched images of a model’s body can never touch the true, unique, authentic beauty you naturally embody. Never lose sight of that, regardless of how many images are thrown your way. There is no gap between who you are now and who you need to become to be “good enough” because authenticity, not perfection is what makes you perfectly you. That’s always enough.
